EDMONTON – Leadership comes in many forms.

The Edmonton Oilers have many leaders on their team. Some Oilers wear a letter, while others let their actions speak for themselves.

For others still, it’s both.

Saturday was not a great game for the team. However, there was a great moment between teammates.

Everyone knows that Matt Savoie registered the first point of his Oilers tenure (and career) with his assist on Leon Draisaitl’s 41st goal of the season. What you might not have known is what happened immediately after.

Draisaitl looked for Savoie and was looking very happy for the rookie forward. He then nudged him to go first through the line with the bench to celebrate with the rest of the team.

The veteran didn’t have to do that – but if someone asked him, he would probably say he had no choice. Offensive players understand the value of a first point or breaking a cold streak.

That is one of the many reasons Draisaitl has a letter on his jersey. He knows what it takes to produce offensively in this league. And judging from the chemistry these two had on Saturday, he’s found a young gun who can keep up with him.

It’s going to be a moment that Savoie remembers for a lifetime. He might not remember exactly how the assist happened years from now. But I’d be willing to bet that he’ll always remember Draisaitl’s gesture.

This moment with Savoie proves that Draisaitl is precisely the kind of leader that the Oilers love to have.
