    EDMONTON -- The Great One.

Edmonton Oilers legend, Wayne Gretzky has held this moniker for his entire life. His hockey career is the most impressive of anyone and everyone to date that's ever played the sport.

A few others come close in a few regards, but there's rarely a discussion about the greatest hockey player of all-time that doesn't include Gretzky.

Which is why him being appointed the honorary captain for Team Canada on Thursday night was an unsurprising one. But, was there a better choice?

    Trending Oilers Stories

Some people believe Bobby Orr could have been a suitor. Mario Lemieux paid a visit to the Canada-Sweden game and the cheers nearly blew the roof off of the Bell Center.

Regardless of who it was - or could have been - many Canadians will remember that game for a very long time.

Bobby Orr also would have been a great choice as the final game was being played in Boston. He has received (and been present to receive) the Order of Canada in addition to so many hockey accolades. I think everyone would have gone crazy and he seems somewhat of a forgotten legend of the game. I say this as a fervent Gretzky fan - I have his signed jersey, paid to be at special events to celebrate him, super fan from the get go of his career. With what has been happening in Canada/U.S. relations, having Gretzky was somewhat tone deaf but the "thumbs up" to the U.S. bench, coming out the U.S. door and not wearing a Canada jersey was ridiculous. His comments in the Canada dressing room about being there even without being paid was so sad -- how could that even enter his psyche. He was missing the true honour and importance of that role in that moment for that game. As for those who say to keep politics out of sports, you didn't live through the original Canada/Russia series. Paul Henderson could have been another great honorary captain & he also said that Team Canada was going to win Thursday's game (are you listening P.K.?).

Any Boston player like Patrice Bergeron would've been a much better choice!

Mario would have been much better by far. Gretzky is a traitor to Canada.

Honestly, it makes me sad. Almost like the little boy in me had his heart broken. This from a 49 year old man who has lived his entire life in Brantford.
