Three hat tricks headlined a high-scoring 11-game slate, sparking crucial breakout performances while leaving struggling goaltenders and underperforming stars under the fantasy microscope following a wild Thursday.
Thursday is one of the best days of the week for hockey, and an 11-game slate made it one of the most memorable nights of the season so far.
The Utah Mammoth, New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings all came away with clutch overtime wins, the Buffalo Sabres outlasted the Anaheim Ducks in a wild 7-6 result, and the Montreal Canadiens stunned the Dallas Stars with a commanding 5-2 victory without captain Nick Suzuki.
Some star players broke out with major performances, while others disappointed again, raising the question of whether fantasy managers need to drop them. Here are the biggest fantasy hockey highs and lows from Thursday.
Trio of Hat Tricks
Buffalo's Tage Thompson was one of the main sources of offense in the Sabres' shootout with the Ducks, scoring a hat trick and adding two assists for a five-point night. The performance lifted his season total to 15 points in 13 games.
Utah's Logan Cooley provided a pivotal hat trick of his own, scoring three of the Mammoth's four goals to edge out a hungry Pittsburgh Penguins team. And Viktor Arvidsson, filling in for Patrick Kane in Detroit, had his best game yet for the Red Wings, scoring three goals and adding an assist for a point on all four Detroit goals in a dominant 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Major Bounce Backs and Hot Streaks Continue
Los Angeles' Drew Doughty has been quietly heating up, following a goal and two assists in Monday's win over the New York Rangers with three assists on Thursday, as the Kings narrowly beat the Ottawa Senators in overtime.
Winnipeg dropped its seventh straight game, but star center Mark Scheifele had a big night, ending his point drought with three assists, and he may have gotten the ball rolling.
Several other players put together massive three-point nights, including Philip Broberg, Drake Batherson, Robert Thomas, Brandon Hagel, Anthony Cirelli, Roman Josi and Tim Stützle, to name a few. Tampa Bay's Pontus Holmberg stood out with a goal and three assists for a four-point night.
Goaltenders Struggle as Offense Runs Hot
With scoring running rampant, it was a rough night for several goaltenders. Anaheim's Ville Husso came in and allowed seven goals on 31 shots, while Buffalo backup Colton Ellis also struggled, giving up six goals on 35 shots.
Even reliable netminders had off nights. Dallas' Jake Oettinger, Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy, Nashville's Juuse Saros, Boston's Jeremy Swayman and Minnesota's Jesper Wallstedt each allowed four goals.
