Welcome to the 2023-24 fantasy hockey season!

For those self-styled advanced fantasy hockey nerds, banger leagues are for you. Standard leagues prize a player's scoring ability above all else, and that's fine, but it falls behind other fantasy sports because it only considers one side of the game.

In fantasy football, you roster defense/special teams. In fantasy baseball, you roster pitchers. In fantasy basketball, blocks and steals are standard categories.

In recent years, to add another layer of difficulty to fantasy hockey, and to provide fantasy value to players whose primary jobs isn't to score, banger leagues have introduced blocked shots and hits.

All of a sudden, players that were considered low value because they didn't score very often, such as Marcus Foligno, now have considerable value. Brady Tkachuk moves from 28th in the standard player rankings to 10th in the banger player rankings because of his 200-plus hits.

These meat-and-potatoes players can be just as important as the scorers, and banger leagues are recognizing that part of the game.

The Hockey News fantasy site will be running a big board all season, featuring a list of the top 300 players for banger leagues. This is the first version, with another to follow in September when training camps start and key roster battles are sorted out. Expect significant changes to come.

The categories considered for the rankings are goals, assists, shots on goal, power-play points, penalty minutes, blocked shots and hits for players, and wins, goals against, saves for goalies.

Use the table below to filter by position, as the fantasy value of defensemen and goalies will be highly dependent on your league settings and draft flow (ie. a run on goalies might force you to draft one higher than his overall ranking would indicate).

The rankings will be updated throughout the season. * denotes injured player. All positions courtesy Yahoo Fantasy and they are subject to change (a lot).
