Jason Chen and Michael Amato wonder if Brent Burns and *gulp* Alex Ovechkin are droppable in fantasy hockey.
The Sleepers and Keepers fantasy hockey podcast hosts Jason Chen and Michael Amato agree that age is a factor in the decline of both Brent Burns, once a rare point-per-game threat from the blueline, and Alex Ovechkin, the best goal scorer of the modern era.
With lower shot volume, fewer minutes and lots of competition on the blueline, Burns' upside is no longer there. After a strong first season with the Hurricanes, Burns is slowly losing his relevance in fantasy despite being rostered in roughly 90 percent of Yahoo leagues.
Ovechkin is still a feared shooter, but without a premier playmaker to set him up, shots missing and going wide more often and penalty kills focusing solely on him without another shooting threat on the Caps' power play, he's on track for just 14 goals.
There are times Ovechkin creeps closer, but he doesn't generate shots by himself. It's going to be hard to score without a partner. Shayna Goldman from The Athletic has an excellent breakdown of what's happening with the Caps PP.
Ovechkin is still too valuable to drop, but that we can even entertain the idea of dropping him is a stark reminder that Father Time remains undefeated.
