The Oilers have played in two Stanley Cup Final Game 7s while this will be Florida's first

Panthers watch party footage from Game 3 of Stanley Cup Final.

Stanley Cup Final Game 7s don’t come along very often.

Since the Stanley Cup Final went to a best-of-7 format in 1939, only 17 times has the series been decided in seven games.

There have been nine Game 7s over the past 50 years.

Now there’s going to be one in Sunrise.

The path that brought the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers to this point will be irrelevant when the puck drops on Monday night at Amerant Bank Arena.

Historically, home teams have gone 12-5 in Stanley Cup Final Game 7s.

There have been two occurrences in which a Cup Final Game 7 has gone to overtime. Both times it was the Detroit Red Wings winning at home, beating the New York Rangers in 1950 and the Montreal Canadiens in 1954.

Four times have Stanley Cup Final Game 7s ended with a shutout, with the last occurrence happening in 2011 when Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins blanked Vancouver 4-0.

In their history, Edmonton has played in two Stanley Cup Final Game 7s. They beat the Philadelphia Flyers in 1987 and lost to Carolina in 2006.

There have been three times in which an NHL franchise earned its first Stanley Cup by winning a Game 7: St. Louis in 2019, Carolina in 2006 and Tampa Bay in 2004.

Now we’ll see how this one plays out.

Either way, there will be some history made Monday night in Sunrise.

The puck drops in the Panthers’ barn at 8 p.m.
