Philly held the Panthers to just three shots on goal duing the third period

Philly held the Panthers to just three shots on goal duing the third period

The Florida Panthers came out of All-Star Weekend full of energy and appeared poised to continue the four-game winning streak they rode into the break.

Unfortunately for the Cats, their edge in energy only appeared to last for about 20 minutes, as they fell to the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 at Amerant Bank Arena on Tuesday night.

Florida outshot the Flyers 5-0 over the first five minutes, holding a 13-0 advantage in shot attempts. Every Cats line had zone time and they hit a pair of goal posts.

They carried that early momentum into the game's first power play, and it took only 14 seconds of the man advantage for Florida to cash in.

An absolute snipe by Carter Verhaeghe went over the blocker of Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson and put the Panthers up 1-0 midway through the opening period.

The second period was a much different story, with the Flyers looking like the more aggressive group and controlling play for the majority of the middle frame.

Travis Konecny tied the game on a breakaway, beating Stolarz with a nifty flip over his glove at the 13:33 mark.

Philly ended up outshooting the Panthers 12-8 in the second period while generating 31 shot attempts to Florida's 14.

Things didn't change much early in the third.

The Flyers took their first lead less than three minutes into the period on Noah Cates' second goal of the season.

After that, Philly went into lockdown mode.

They held the Panthers to only three shots during the third period, including none during the final minutes as Florida made its final push with Stolarz on the bench.

On to the Capitals, who are in town on Wednesday.

Here are some thoughts and observations from Tuesday's tilt with the Flyers:

Florida went 1-for-2 on the power play, unable to generate a shot during the second man advantage that came during the third period.

It was a similar story on the penalty kill for Florida, extinguishing the Flyers only power play and not allowing a shot in the process.

The Panthers dropped to 20-1-4 when scoring the first goal of the game.

Anton Lundell's line with Nick Cousins and Eetu Luostarinen was very active and effective on both ends of the ice throughout the game.

On the other hand, Sasha Barkov's line with Evan Rodrigues and Sam Reinhart was quiet, generating only three shots on goal.

Reinhart was held without a shot on goal for the first time since Nov. 22 and only the third time this season.
