On Wednesday, the National Hockey League announced the 32 nominees for the 2023-24 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, one from each NHL team.

The Florida Panthers have nominated team captain Sasha Barkov.

Every year, the King Clancy Trophy is given “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”

For the past five seasons Barkov has partnered with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, donating $1,600 for every goal he scores and $800 for every assist, as well as a suite to every Panthers home game, to the hospital.

The winner will be selected by a group of former King Clancy winners and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

    Per the NHL:

In determining the winner, the selection committee will consider the criteria of a nominee’s inspiration, involvement, and impact to positively benefit his community.

The nominee with the most votes will be named the winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice. New this year, the winner will also be eligible to elect that his Club receive a grant from the NHL, up to $20,000, to help organize a special activation related to his humanitarian cause.

Barkov was selected second overall by Florida at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

He was named team captain prior to the 2018-19 season.

Over his 11 seasons with the Panthers, which are tied for the most of any player (with Stephen Weiss), Barkov holds the franchise records for goals (266), assists (445), points (711) and games played (737).
