The former Wild defender has carved out a long career in the NHL. Brent Burns was drafted as a forward with the 20th pick in the 2003 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild.

He was later moved to defense by the Wild where he blossomed. He played all 82 games in 2007-08 and set a Wild record for defensemen with eight power-play goals. His 46 points (17 goals, 29 assists) in 2010-11 set a Wild single-season mark for defensemen.

But in 2011 the Wild traded Burns to the San Jose Sharks for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and San Jose's 1st round pick (Zack Phillips) in 2011 NHL Draft.

The Sharks moved Burns to forward during the 2012-13 season, and he blossomed in 2013-14, scoring 22 goals and got his first NHL hat trick that season. The Sharks moved him back to defense in 2014-15.

He recorded 17 goals in 2014-15 and finished tied for second among NHL defensemen with 60 points.

In 2016-17 Burns recorded 29 goals, 47 assists, and 76 points and became the first player in Sharks history to win the Norris Trophy. He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes after the 2021-22 season and has spent the last three years with the Canes.

Burns, 39, recorded 55 goals, 128 assists, and 183 points in 453 career games with the Wild. He just recorded his 900th career point on February 1 against the Los Angeles Kings.

The 6-foot-5 defenseman has 259 goals, 641 assists, and 900 points in 1,470 career games.
