The Minnesota Wild will welcome back Olli Maatta and Jared Spurgeon to the lineup. They'll replace Matt Kiersted and David Spacek. Additionally, Rieger Lorenz rejoins the lineup to take on his hometown team, the Calgary Flames.
Despite the numerous injuries, the Minnesota Wild have handled things quite well.
They sit tied for first place in the Central Division with the Utah Mammoth and nearly pulled off a comeback victory against the Edmonton Oilers.
Despite missing several key defensive players, the Wild have been strong defensively, leaning on their structure and goaltender Jesper Wallstedt.
As the Wild navigate these injuries, they'll welcome back veteran Olli Maatta and captain Jared Spurgeon to the lineup.
Before leaving for their road trip, coach John Hynes confirmed that the defensive duo would accompany the team on the road. After missing the opening game of the road trip, Maatta and Spurgeon are healthy and can return tonight against the Calgary Flames.
Prior to the injuries, Maatta had skated in six games, recording two assists while averaging 21:22 of ice time. Maatta has been a calming presence. He's been very effective defensively at 5-on-5 and has been stellar on the penalty kill. After allowing three power-play goals on Tuesday, the Wild will be thrilled to see Maatta and Spurgeon return.
As for Spurgeon, he was stellar before the injury. Paired with Quinn Hughes, Spurgeon had scored one goal and five points in six games, averaging 22:22 of ice time. His leadership, defensive excellence, and overall presence will be welcomed back with wide-open arms.
Matt Kiersted and David Spacek will exit the lineup in place of Maatta and Spurgeon. Spurgeon will be paired with Hughes, while Maatta will skate with Jonas Brodin.
Additionally, Rieger Lorenz rejoins the Wild lineup to face his hometown team. Hynes mentioned there is one game-time decision but did not reveal who it was.
