One year ago to this day, the Minnesota Wild traded for Dmitry Orlov but flipped him to Boston in the same deal as they played middleman to retain 50% of Orlov's cap hit so the Bruins could acquire him from the Washington Capitals.
The Wild played middleman in a deal for the second time in just six days. They retained 50% of Ryan O'Reilly's contract six days prior so the Toronto Maple Leafs could acquire him.
By retaining 50% of Orlov and O'Reilly's contracts, the Wild acquired a 2023 fifth-round pick, which they used to trade for Gustav Nyquist, and a 2025 fourth-round pick.
Orlov, 32, signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes July 1, 2023.
