According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, the Minnesota Wild are aggressively pursuing Dylan Larkin and have offered the Detroit Red Wings several packages, including multiple first-round picks.
It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, but the Minnesota Wild are very keen on adding Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin to their roster.
There might not be a team in the NHL that is as eager to trade for Larkin as the Wild. And The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun's latest report confirms those desires.
Yesterday, the Larkin trade saga took a turn. Despite requesting a trade, Larkin was still playing for the Red Wings and had skated in 10 of their first 12 games. But the morning of their 13th game sparked a change: Larkin would not play another game for the Red Wings, and the organization would suspend him without pay.
LeBrun revealed that trade talks had significantly escalated. Today, he delved deeper into the situation.
When discussing the Wild, LeBrun revealed that Wild GM Bill Guerin has sent multiple offers to the Red Wings.
"The Wild remain very interested," said LeBrun. "They’ve made multiple offers. The issue for Detroit seems to be the lack of immediate NHL talent in those offers, which are more futures-based. But I think the offers have included multiple first-round picks as part of a package. It’s not nothing."
Detroit has been very insistent on wanting NHL talent in return for Larkin, as the team would rather retool than rebuild. The Wild, on the other hand, don't want to make a lateral move by losing key pieces. The Red Wings almost assuredly want Danila Yurov in return for Larkin, but the Wild organization clearly holds Yurov to a high standard and doesn’t want to part ways with him.
As LeBrun noted, a package of multiple first-round picks isn’t a weak offer. The Red Wings are clearly pondering the offer but remain hopeful another team is willing to cough up what they desire.
According to LeBrun's report, those offers won't come from the Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, or Dallas Stars, as they either feel secure at center or can’t meet the Red Wings' demand. Realistically, that trims the list down to the Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Washington Capitals.
In the end, this saga could end if the Red Wings lose patience and realize they won't find a better offer than the Wild's, or if another team elects to pay the price to land the 30-year-old.
To trade for Larkin, the Wild would have to move money around to fit his $8.7 million AAV under the salary cap. That could mean involving a player like Ryan Hartman or goaltender Filip Gustavsson.
One thing is certain: the Wild are pushing hard to land Larkin, and the fit makes all the sense in the world.
