A brutal opening stretch forces Minnesota to endure twenty road games by December, testing their grit before a massive holiday homestand offers a chance to climb the standings.
The NHL released its full 2026-27 regular-season schedule Thursday, and while several reunion games and marquee matchups immediately stand out, the biggest storyline for the Minnesota Wild is impossible to miss.
The road.
Minnesota will spend much of the opening two months away from Grand Casino Arena, playing 10 of its first 14 games on the road and 20 of its first 30 away from home.
October alone features 10 road games, including a season-long five-game road trip from Oct. 20-27.
It's a demanding start for a team expected to be among the Western Conference contenders. Navigating that stretch successfully could go a long way toward determining where the Wild sit in the standings by the time the calendar flips to December.
Fortunately for Minnesota, the schedule begins to balance out after the difficult opening.
Beginning on Dec. 12, the Wild won't leave home for the remainder of the month. Minnesota will enjoy its longest homestand of the season with seven consecutive home games, playing seven home games and zero road games between Dec. 12 and Dec. 31.
Combined with January, which also features nine home contests, the middle portion of the schedule offers an opportunity to make up ground after the travel-heavy first two months.
The schedule also features several reunions.
One of the most anticipated games of the season will come on Oct. 25, when Quinn Hughes returns to Vancouver for the first time since joining the Wild.
Another fan favorite returns on Dec. 22, when Mats Zuccarello comes back to Minnesota with the Los Angeles Kings.
After spending seven seasons with the Wild and becoming one of the franchise's most popular players, Zuccarello's return should be one of the season's more memorable nights.
Jake Middleton will also skate at Grand Casino Arena as a visitor for the first time when the Calgary Flames come to town on March 19.
Minnesota's schedule includes 10 back-to-back sets, another test of the club's depth over the course of the season.
The Wild will also receive an extended break from Jan. 31 through Feb. 10 during the NHL All-Star festivities and the league's scheduled bye week.
The 2026-27 schedule consists of 84 games, split evenly between 42 home games and 42 road games. Within the division, Minnesota will face each Central Division opponent four times for 28 total games, while playing 24 games against Pacific Division opponents as part of the NHL's divisional format.
Wild fans should also have plenty of chances to see the team on weekends. Minnesota's home schedule features 23 weekend games, including five on Friday, 11 on Saturday and seven on Sunday. One tradition that won't continue, however, is a New Year's Eve game, as the Wild are not scheduled to play on Dec. 31.
Schedules don't determine a season, but they can certainly shape one.
For the Wild, the challenge will be surviving one of the league's toughest opening stretches before taking advantage of a much friendlier run later in the year. If Minnesota can weather the early travel, the schedule appears to offer opportunities to build momentum when the games begin carrying even greater weight.
