The Minnesota Wild have announced that captain Jared Spurgeon will be out week-to-week with a lower-body injury. They have also recalled 2021 first-round pick Carson Lambos from the AHL's Iowa Wild.
The recent spell of injuries for the Minnesota Wild and Jared Spurgeon continues, as the Wild's captain will be out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
The 36-year-old exited Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Utah Mammoth after just 10:01 of ice time. Spurgeon blocked two heavy shots from Dylan Guenther the shift before leaving the game. Spurgeon looked shaken after blocking the first shot, but stayed in the play and blocked another Guenther shot 15 seconds later.
Spurgeon missed four games earlier this season with an upper-body injury. In the 10 games he’s played, Spurgeon has produced one goal and five points, averaging 20:33 of ice time. He has been stellar in the games he's appeared in, filling the void Brock Faber's injury has left behind.
Whether it's shorthanded, on the second power-play unit, or at even strength with Quinn Hughes, Spurgeon has been outstanding for the Wild.
His absence will be difficult to manage, but the Wild must adopt a next-man-up mentality.
In the wake of Sprugeon's injury, the Wild have recalled 2021 first-round pick Carson Lambos from the AHL.
Lambos is yet to feature in an NHL game this season, but has been called up on numerous occasions. In his time in the NHL this year, he's served as an extra defenseman and will likely do so again.
Unless the Wild face another injury, or the coach John Hynes elects to scratch David Spacek or Matt Kiersted, Lambos will spend his call-up in the press box. Spacek is expected to join the Wild lineup in place of Spurgeon.
The Wild are back in action tonight as they take on the New York Islanders at the Grand Casino Arena.
