The Wild have made a waiver claim on the Edmonton Oilers defenseman.
ST. PAUL - The injury-riddled Minnesota Wild have made a roster move on the waiver wire. Despite ranking 31st in the wire waiver the Wild have claimed defenseman Travis Dermott from the Edmonton Oilers.
Dermott, 27, was put on waivers by the Oilers before they stomped the Wild 7-1 in Minnesota for their first win against the Wild at the Xcel Energy Center since February of 2019.
In ten NHL games this year, Dermott has zero points and is a minus-three. He had two goals and seven points in 50 games last season for the Arizona Coyotes and was a minus-14.
According to MoneyPuck, Dermott ranks 21st out of 21 skaters with 50 minutes minimum of ice time in on-ice expected goals per 60 minutes.
But with Jake Middleton (left-shot) getting hurt on Thursday, Jonas Brodin (left-shot) on the Injured Reserve, and Daemon Hunt traded for a right-shot defenseman prospect, the Wild have claimed Dermott off waivers.
The only left-shot defensemen in the Wild's organization are Jack Peart, Ryan O'Rourke, Carson Lambos, and Will Zmolek. None of them have played an NHL game in their careers.
Dermott has played 339 career NHL games across eight seasons with four different teams. He has mainly been an extra defenseman ever since leaving Toronto where he started his career.
The 6-foot defenseman and former second-round pick by the Maple Leafs will get a good chance to play games for the Wild with their current injuries.
