Ironman defenseman Aaron Pionk maintains his veteran presence for the Bulldogs, parlaying a remarkable 113-game ironman streak and elite shot-blocking skills into a second consecutive captaincy.
Minnesota Wild prospect Aaron Pionk is adding another leadership role to his resume ahead of his senior season at Minnesota Duluth.
The Bulldogs announced their leadership group Friday after the team voted on its captains earlier in the week, with Pionk once again being named an alternate captain.
Pionk served as an alternate captain last season and has developed into one of the most experienced and dependable players on Minnesota Duluth's roster.
The 23-year-old defenseman has yet to miss a game during his three-year collegiate career, appearing in 113 consecutive games for the Bulldogs. Over that span, the Hermantown, Minn., native has recorded seven goals and 49 assists for 56 points.
Pionk led Minnesota Duluth with 61 blocked shots as a junior, averaging 1.52 blocks per game. He has also been recognized for his work academically, earning conference academic honors in each of his first three seasons.
Minnesota selected Pionk in the fifth round (No. 149 overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft. He entered college as a forward before transitioning to defense, making his development path considerably different from that of the typical NHL defensive prospect.
Now entering his fourth season at Minnesota Duluth, Pionk has established himself as a veteran presence on the Bulldogs' blue line. Being voted into a leadership position for a second consecutive season is another indication of the trust he has earned from his teammates.
His brother Neal played for the Bulldogs from 2015-17 and currently plays for the Winnipeg Jets.
Pionk will have an opportunity to take another step during his senior season as he continues his pursuit of an NHL contract with the Wild.
Before that decision arrives, however, one of Minnesota's defensive prospects will once again have a letter on his sweater in Duluth.
