On this day in 2023, the Minnesota Wild traded for Ryan O'Reilly but flipped him to Toronto in the same deal when they played middleman to retain 50% of O'Reilly's cap hit so the Maple Leafs could acquire him.
In return for retaining half of O'Reilly's contact, the Wild got a 2025 fourth-round pick. This wasn't the last time the Wild would make a trade like this, six days later they retained half of Dmitry Orlov's contract from Washington so Boston could acquire the big defenseman.
O'Reilly never played for the Wild but was technically a member of the organization even if it was for only a couple of minutes. O'Reilly only played 13 regular season games for the Maple Leafs and eventually signed a four-year deal with the Nashville Predators.
