Will the Canadiens look to trade Samuel Montembeault this off-season?
Samuel Montembeault has become the odd goalie out on the Montreal Canadiens' roster. Due to this, questions about Montembeault's future with the Canadiens came up throughout most of the regular-season.
Now, Montembeault is continuing to be the subject of trade speculation.
Frank Seravalli of Hockey 24/7 released his first trade board for the 2026 NHL off-season, and Montembeault made the cut. The Canadiens netminder was given the No. 11 spot on Seravalli's trade board.
Seeing Montembeault make another trade board is not necessarily surprising. With Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler being ahead of Montembeault on the Canadiens' depth chart, it would not be surprising if the Habs looked to move him this off-season. This is especially so when noting that he has a $3.15 million cap hit, which is expensive for a third-string goalie.
However, if the Canadiens move Montembeault this off-season, they would be doing so while his trade value is low. The 29-year-old struggled this regular-season with Montreal, posting a 10-8-4 record, an .872 save percentage, and a 3.43 goals-against average in 25 games. He also played two games for the Laval Rocket on an AHL conditioning loan, where he had a 0-2-0 record and a .904 save percentage.
