Once in a while, there’s a player who is worth drafting as an over-ager. One player this year could be 20-year-old, Jonathan Fauchon. He’s a center who plays for Blainsville-Boisbrand Armada in the QMJHL.
Next season, he’s committed to Providence University, where Nate Leaman runs that program brilliantly. I wasn’t familiar with this player, so I checked him out after seeing the post on X by Brock Otten, Norton Sports and Neutral Zone. It got me interested quickly.
This season, Fauchon has 25 goals and 25 assists in 31 games. I get it, especially because he’s older. He’s very good on the power play. He gets endless time on it. He draws penalties and that’s good. That’s hard to do.
At 5’11”, he may play center as he moves up the ladder. InStat has him at 61% face-offs but 45% puck battles won. That’s something that could go up after he gets stronger in college. He will play fewer games and have more time to work out. That’s a big plus about NCAA hockey.
I like his zone entries, his playmaking ability and the release on his wrist shot. All are top-notch and that’s something that will work at the NCAA level too. But, he’s going to play against older players and will have to get past the tighter checking game, more physicality, and much better goalies than he’s currently facing.
I’d use a sixth or seventh-round pick on his in the 2025 NHL Draft. Leaman develops players and a few years in college can do wonders for this player.
