Yesterday Nashville Predators GM Barry Trotz spoke candidly on 102.5 The Game's Stillman and Company show about the recent situation with defenseman Tyson Barrie, and his comments set an expectation for players going forward.
Nashville Predators General Manager Barry Trotz had a frank discussion yesterday on 102.5 The Game's Stillman and Company show about the situation involving Predators' defenseman Tyson Barrie and a potential trade.
On Saturday, Elliotte Friedman reported that Barrie had been given permission to talk to other teams about a potential trade, but that information did not come from Trotz or the Predators organization according to the GM in yesterday's interview.
-"We talked to the agent and very disappointed that got out because there’s only about four people in the world that know about any conversation about anything and somehow it got out. So I was very disappointed in that process. It didn’t come from the Preds I do know that 100%. So obviously they felt that, someone felt that it should be out there and they put it out there."
Trotz also addressed how Barrie handled being a healthy scratch for two games after head coach Andrew Brunette felt the veteran defenseman was not meeting expectations with his play.
-I was very disappointed in the way Tyson handled it and in his group. But at the same time, he’s got to play for us right now. And like I said when I first came here, I want you to come here to win. I don’t want you to come here to retire. So if you don’t want to be part of the organization or feel like you could contribute then we’ll work together to get you in a better situation. But I’m not going to do anything to hurt the Predators or the team’s chances of winning based on a player’s reaction to sitting out a game. There’s many top players in the league who got sat this year around the league, and I just…everybody has a different level of I will say professionalism or maturity whatever it may be of handling a situation. So you know, you hear around the league different players handle it differently. Tyson handled it this way and that’s not necessarily the way I would want it to be, but at the same time it is what it is and we have good communication with Tyson, with Andrew, myself, and his agent so we’re all good. He’s just got to play better plain and simple. We usually don’t scratch players who we just..we just feel that there’s a better ceiling for Tyson himself.
Trotz did point out that he feels that the parties involved are "all good" after conversations about what has happened.

Barrie did play in last night's 4-3 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks, but he saw the least amount of ice time of any player on the Nashville roster. The Preds did opt to play seven defensemen and eleven forwards as Cole Smith was out with illness and Liam Foudy was a healthy scratch.
It remains to be seen what the future will be for Barrie and the Predators, but Barry Trotz has made it clear through this situation that he has a certain way he expects players and agents to navigate issues like this that arise in the future.
