Devils' Net Is The Envy Of The League
The New Jersey Devils made two bold moves in the offseason that have paid off in spades. Goaltenders are a team's most important players. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofBInd8fCZw[/embed] When you find a good goaltender, you hold on to them. When you have two? You thank each and every one of the hockey gods for the good karma you have (or whatever people say to the "hockey gods"). The New Jersey Devils are one of those teams that has two fantastic goalies. Oddly enough, both netminders were acquired via trade. Jake Allen was brought in at last year's trade deadline for a conditional third-round draft pick. On June 19, the Devils sent a first-round pick and Kevin Bahl to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Jacob Markstrom. In both deals, the Devils were able to get the other team to retain their salary. This season, both goalies have posted solid numbers. For Allen, he has a 5-2-1 record in eight games. He also has sported a 2.26 goals against average (GAA), a .921 save percentage (SV%), and two shutouts to boot. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muE_Diu98kk[/embed] Alternatively, Markstrom has taken the bulk of the starts with 16. He has a 10-5-1 record in those games, a 2.51 GAA, a .907 SV%, and one shutout. Impressively, the Devils are spending just over $6 million for the combined services of the two netminders. That level of asset management should give Tom Fitzgerald more than a few votes for GM of the year come award season. The Devils are the team with the second-best record in the league and one of the best - if not the best - goalie tandem in the NHL. New Devils Forward Is Home Run Acquisition
This new addition is making good on his second opportunity with the New Jersey Devils. If you aren't improving, what's the point? [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofBInd8fCZw[/embed] Every team in the NHL is trying to do better this season than they did previously. One team pushing that has done that at the quarter mark of the 2024-25 season is the New Jersey Devils. This past summer, they acquired a slew of players, including (but not limited to) Jake Allen, Jacob Markstrom, Brett Pesce, and Stefan Noesen.  The Devils' goaltending so far this season has been sensational. Pesce has been the veteran presence that Luke Hughes needs to help him learn the ins and outs of being an NHL defender. But Noesen has been nothing short of a revelation offensively. The 31-year-old forward has recorded 18 points in 23 games. That has him producing at a 0.78-points-per-game pace. At the time of this writing, he is on pace to smash his previous career high of 37 points. He could nearly double that total by the end of this season. If he continues to produce at this level, he could finish the year with 64 points. Something is clicking between Noesen and the rest of the powerplay unit. He sees the same amount of ice time with the man advantage as in 2022-23. He finished that season with 15 points on the man advantage -- he currently has seven powerplay points this year. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA558IapHZ4[/embed] More impressively, 10 of his 18 points have come from goals. His career high is 14, a record that he set last season.  I don't think anyone envisioned this kind of production from the gritty forward when he signed a three-year $2.75-million contract this past summer. But no one is complaining, not while the Devils sit in first place in their division and overall in the Eastern Conference. How's that for improvement? Devils Call-Up Reinforcements From The Comets
New Jersey Devils made a flurry of moves on Monday. Injuries are a double-edged sword. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCjhCjCkWWA[/embed] The New Jersey Devils are about to learn why. On the one hand, injuries mean you are losing a player, which you don't want, no matter who the player is. On the other hand, they create opportunity. Right now, an opportunity is knocking for Shane Bowers, Justin Dowling, Nolan Foote, and Nick DeSimone. The quartet was called up from Utica earlier on Monday, but the transactions will be recorded tomorrow for cap purposes.  Their recall is primarily due to the placement of Nathan Bastian on LTIR and Curtis Lazar on IR. Whether or not these players actually see the ice for Thursday's game is yet to be seen. But the opportunity will be there. Foote has had the best offensive season of the call-ups thus far. He has posted nine points in 12 games with the Comets. Last year, he played four games with the Devils, scoring a single goal and averaging 10 minutes per game. Dowling was just sent down to the AHL yesterday. He has played nine games for the NHL club, contributing in a bottom-six role where he's averaged just over eight minutes a game. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8trEovIEhY[/embed] Bowers hasn't been bringing much offense. In 13 games with the Comets, he has three assists. Finally, DeSimone provides some welcome depth to the blue line. Last season, he saw 34 NHL games, including 11 with the Devils. He averaged 12 minutes a night in his 23 games with the Calgary Flames but saw 16:29 with the Devils.  Make sure you bookmark THN's New Jersey Devils site for THN's latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns, and so much more. Insider Praises Devils Jack Hughes For Unsportsmanlike Penalty
New Jersey Devils superstar displays a different side of his game this season. Improving as a player often means evolving. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aakL7Sdkty0[/embed] New Jersey Devils superstar Jack Hughes is evolving before our eyes. In the Devils' last game against the Florida Panthers, Hughes threw a hit on Panthers forward Anton Lundell after the whistle was blown. He was assessed a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Earlier in the play, Hughes had the puck in the offensive zone when Lundell cross-checked him in the shoulder, causing him to fall to the ice. Hughes caught up with him going the other direction, and when both were skating beside the boards, he checked him into the boards. I guess that Hughes took exception to being cross-checked on the shoulder. Regardless of why, insider Elliotte Friedman talked about the penalty on the latest episode of 32 Thoughts. "I love that Jack Hughes got that penalty," Friedman reveals. "Jack Hughes has been playing great; if he keeps going like this, we're going to start talking about him in the MVP conversation."  "I don't think it's a bad thing once in a while for him to do something like that," Friedman continues. "He can't do it a lot; they need him on the ice, but not bad once in a while to run over somebody." "I kinda liked it." It's good for hockey if its stars show some character and dimension. Hughes took exception and let the opposing player know he didn't like that.  If this is how Hughes is evolving, it will only make him a better player. Rugged Devils Forward Wins Big Fight
Another New Jersey Devils win, another big fight. Let's go streaking. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwihHr7JBc8[/embed] The New Jersey Devils impressed everyone with their commanding 6-2 victory over the Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers. Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes, and Stefan Noesen led offensively last night. But last night featured more than just offense. Fireworks sparked a few nights ago between Brenden Dillon and Jonah Gadjovich. Last night, Kurtis MacDermid exchanged haymakers with the feisty Gadjovich. The 30-year-old is in his second season with the Devils. Last year, he only dressed for 16 games, recorded a single assist, and played 4:22 per game.  This year, he's played nine of the team's 20 games. He's averaging more ice time, 5:56, but he has yet to record a point. Despite this, the Devils have a 7-1-1 record with MacDermid in the lineup. After last night's tilt with Gadjovich, MacDermid is tied with his teammate Dillon for the most fights this season, with three each. The Devils have had the most fights of any other team in the NHL, with 10. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wlW70JK3Go[/embed] The Los Angeles Kings have nine fights, while the Nashville Predators and the Utah Hockey Club have eight. The Devils get a day off before taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning in their barn on Saturday night.  Make sure you bookmark THN's New Jersey Devils site for THN's latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns, and so much more. Devils Reveal Starting Goalie Against Panthers
The starting goalie for the New Jersey Devils. Round two. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbt7i5Jcuvo[/embed] The New Jersey Devils are facing the reigning Stanley Cup Champions for the second straight game. Bizarrely enough, game two against the Florida Panthers is also on the road. The Devils skated this morning. From the looks of things, Sheldon Keefe looks to keep the forward lines and defense pairings the same as last game. It's tough to fault a coach for sticking to a winning lineup. Especially one that beat the same team. Sam Kazan reported the following line combinations on X.  Perhaps more important than the line combinations are the starting goalies for each team. Sergei Bobrovsky is in the net for the Panthers. The 36-year-old Russian netminder has a record of 8-2-1, a 2.95 goals against average (GAA), and a .895 save percentage (SV%). Jake Allen will be between the pipes for the Devils. The 34-year-old goalie has had a great year for the Devils so far. He has a record of 3-2-1, a 2.35 GAA, a .914 SV%, and two shutouts. Tonight's game begins at 7:00 P.M Eastern Standard Time. The game will be televised on Sportsnet. Devils Defender Throws Down In Heavyweight Tilt
Last night, the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers had one of the most entertaining fights of the season. Emotions can get the best of us. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbt7i5Jcuvo[/embed] Sometimes, this is a bad thing. Other times, like last night's New Jersey Devils, it can light a fire under a team that allows them to band together and pull out a win. Thus, a 4-1 victory for the Devils over the Florida Panthers. Jacob Markstrom came up big for the Devils, but according to Paul Cotter, Brenden Dillon's fight sparked the team to victory. It was a spirited fight between the Devils' defender and Panthers' forward Jonah Gadjovich. For the first part of the fight, Dillon kept up with one-handed jabs while Gadjovich came out with guns akimbo.  Dillon is no stranger to dropping the mitts. This season alone, he has fought a league-leading three times, including last night. He is tied for the lead with Tanner Jeannot and Michael McCarron. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsdgymUzBeg[/embed] With a good chunk of the season left, there is a lot of runway for Dillon to smash his fighting record of seven fights. He set that record last season while playing for the Winnipeg Jets. Make sure you bookmark THN's New Jersey Devils site for THN's latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns, and so much more.
