The New Jersey Devils have recalled goaltender Akira Schmid from the Utica Comets of the AHL.

Kaapo Kahkonen was taken out of Sunday's game against the Nashville Predators with an undisclosed injury. He returned for the second period but served as the backup goaltender to Jake Allen. Recalling Schmid is a strong indication that Kahkonen won't be available for tonight's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Schmid has split his time with the Devils and the Comets this season. With the Devils, he's posting a .895SV% and a 3.15GAA. With the Comets he has a .891SV% and a 3.12GAA. The 23-year-old was stellar last year for the Devils in the 18 games he played but has struggled to find his game this season.

The Devils have four games remaining on the schedule and none of them are back-to-backs. If Kahkonen is out for the rest of the season, Allen could start the remaining four games. Interim Head Coach Travis Green will have to decide if Schmid will play any games depending on where the Devils sit in the standings.

Allen has played a lot of games recently. This season he's played in 31 games and played nearly two full games back-to-back on the weekend. The 33-year-old may need some rest.
