On Saturday, the Blackhawks announced that Bedard was placed on injured reserve with a fractured jaw.

On Jan. 5, the New Jersey Devils hosted the Chicago Blackhawks at Prudential Center. It was the second and final meeting between the two teams this season, as the Devils earned a 4-2 victory on Nov. 5.

After a fast-paced opening five minutes where there were a total of 13 shots on goal, the game's complexion shifted with nine minutes remaining in the first period.

Brendan Smith delivered a hit on rookie Connor Bedard as the youngster skated into the Devils zone. After falling to the ice, the first-overall pick quickly got up, skated to his bench, and headed down the tunnel holding his face.

What ensued was a game filled with 64 penalty minutes, including 14 infractions in the second period. The Devils eventually earned a 4-2 win, but multiple players left due to injury in addition to Bedard.

On Saturday afternoon, the Blackhawks announced that Bedard was placed on injured reserve with a fractured jaw, and Nick Foligno, who fought Smith after the hit, was also played on injured reserve with a fractured left finger.

On the Devils' side of the ice, Jack Hughes could not complete the game after an awkward fall and headed down the tunnel in the second half of the third period. At the time of publication, there was no update on the Devils center.
