"Luke all the way through, he scores! Luke Hughes goes coast-to-coast and ties it!"

All one needed to hear was the excitement in MSGN play-by-play announcer Bill Spaulding's voice when he called New Jersey Devils' defenseman Luke Hughes' fifth goal of the season.

With 1:31 seconds remaining in the final period, the Columbus Blue Jackets held a 3-2 lead over the Devils.

Jack Hughes found himself behind his own net. He left the puck for his younger brother, Luke. The blueliner quickly skated through all three zones, passing four out of the five opposing Blue Jackets players in the process. His wrist shot beat Columbus netminder Elvis Merzlikins, the red light went on, and the fans were on their feet.

The 20-year-old tied the game and set the stage for Timo Meier's game-winning goal in overtime.

"I came off the bench and got a little speed," Hughes said after the game. "I came around, and when you have that much speed, I think it's easy to penetrate a bit. It kind of just opened up for me, and I tried to get the puck on net."

"When you see that, you starting thinking about some of the great skaters in the game, head coach Lindy Ruff said. "Great skating defensemen. You think of Brian Leetch, you think of Paul Coffey. You automatically start thinking of the guys who can get up ice. (Hughes) did that a couple of times tonight. Incredible goal."

According to the media notes, the Hughes brothers have factored in together on seven Devils goals this season. The 2019 first-overall pick was credited with the primary assist on the goal.

In 33 games, Luke has 17 points (five goals, 12 assists), which is tied for fifth among rookie players with Connor Zary of the Calgary Flames and Dmitri Voronkov of the Blue Jackets.
