The New Jersey Devils are in the sixth wild card spot with a record of 31-29-4.

The Carolina Hurricanes handed the New Jersey Devils a 4-2 loss Saturday afternoon at Prudential Center. The club is 3-7-0 in their last ten games.

Once again, the Devils surrendered the game's opening goal. While on the power play, Martin Necas' slap shot from the blue line beat goaltender Nico Daws to give Carolina a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game.

Teuvo Teravainen and former Devil Stefan Noesen earned the helpers.

After 20 minutes, the Hurricanes had a 10-6 shot advantage over the Devils. New Jersey had a 14-6 hit advantage.

Carolina believed they extended their lead to 2-0 on the power play with seven minutes remaining in the second period. However, the goal was quickly waived off for goaltender interference. Hurricanes' head coach Rod Brind'Amour and his staff challenged the call, but after a somewhat lengthy review, the call on the ice was confirmed - no goal.

    The score remained 1-0 Carolina.

Devils captain Nico Hischier tied the game with four minutes remaining in the middle frame. Jack Hughes picked the puck up off the wall near Carolina's blue line and found Hischier. His snap shot beat opposing goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov.

After 40 minutes, the Hurricanes had 19-13 shot advantage over the Devils. New Jersey had a 21-9 hit advantage.

Carolina scored its second goal on its second shot of the third period. Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored his 11th of the season 2:50 into the final frame from the Devils' goal line.

Andrei Svechnikov hit the empty net with a little over a minute left to play, extending the Hurricanes' lead to 3-1.

With seconds remaining in regulation, the Devils found the back of the net. Timo Meier was credited with his 18th goal of the season, extending his goal streak to five games. John Marino and Jack Hughes earned the assists. It marked Hughes' second assist of the afternoon and Marino's third assist in his last two games.

Teuvo Teravainen secured Carolina's victory when he scored into the empty net in the game's waning seconds.

Nico Daws made 22 saves on 24 shots and completed the game with a .917 save percentage.

"I think it was a good game," Hischier said. "We were there, competed hard. That was a hard game. I think if you ask them over there, they would say it wasn't an easy win for them. So, sometimes we've got to take the positives out of it here and I think we didn't play a bad game. We move on from here."
