New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer fought New York Rangers winger Will Cuylle after the latter was called for boarding Brendan Smith.
It was fight night at Madison Square Garden.
On Wednesday, the New York Rangers hosted the New Jersey Devils for their final meeting of the 2023-24 season. The game started with a line brawl that included the highly anticipated Kurtis MacDermid-Matt Rempe matchup. The result was eight players, four from each team, ejected after two seconds of ice time.
Minutes later, Rangers winger Will Cuylle was called for boarding against Devils defenseman Brendan Smith. Dawson Mercer wasted no time going after Cuylle, dropping the gloves for the first time in his career. It was no surprise that Mercer's first career fight resulted from him standing up for his teammate.
Cuylle might have had the edge in the brawl, but the 22-year-old held his own in his first career fight.
Mercer was handed a 10-minute misconduct, five minutes for fighting, and two minutes for instigating.
