NEWARK, N.J. -- On Oct. 28, 2017, the New Jersey Devils traded Scott Wedgwood to the Arizona Coyotes for a fifth-round draft pick. With that pick, New Jersey selected goaltender Akira Schmid 136th overall.
Schmid is one of four Swiss players on New Jersey's roster. The 23-year-old was born in Bern, Switzerland, and played most of his youth and junior hockey in the SCL Tigers organization of the National League. He came to North America before the 2018-19 campaign, playing in the United States Hockey League (USHL) for three seasons.
The netminder's evolution was one of the biggest Devils' storylines last season. He made a name for himself during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, earning two shutouts versus the New York Rangers, including a pivotal Game 7.
After the team's Oct. 23 practice, he participated in a little game of rapid fire with Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News responding with the first answer that came to mind.
