The puck drops for the New Jersey Devils in just 44 days. To mark the countdown, we’re highlighting the player behind the number - Dennis Cholowski (#44).
Cholowski, 27, joined the Devils last season after leaving the New York Islanders. Originally drafted 20th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2016, the defenseman has appeared in 156 NHL games, recording 40 career points. His most active season came in 2018–19 with Detroit, when he suited up for 52 games.
The two-way blueliner was acquired by New Jersey on March 7, 2025, and later signed a one-year, $775,000 contract on July 1. He played six games for the Devils last season and will look to push for more time in 2025–26.
At 6-foot-2, Cholowski brings size and mobility to the bottom of the defensive pairings. While the Devils’ top pair of Luke Hughes and Dougie Hamilton are firmly established, Cholowski could provide depth and stability if injuries arise.
That said, consistency has been a challenge throughout his career. Despite being a former first-round pick, much of his professional experience has come in the AHL, where he has spent significant time with various affiliates. It’s likely he will begin this season with the Utica Comets, though a call-up remains possible.
With 44 days until the season opener, Cholowski may not be penciled into the Devils’ opening-night roster, but he’ll be a name to watch as the season unfolds, especially if opportunity arises.
