The New Jersey Devils enter the 2025–26 season with their eyes on a deep playoff run. And as the season begins, there’s plenty of debate about one question: Who exactly makes up the Devils’ “Big Three”?

According to SlapShot, the trio is Jack Hughes, Luke Hughes, and Jacob Markstrom, a star forward, a rising young defenseman, and a veteran goaltender who have each made their mark on the franchise.

Jack Hughes, despite battling two injuries last season, has brought a new level of excitement and energy to the Devils. Already etched into franchise history as a 40-goal scorer and multi-time playoff leader, he’s undoubtedly the team’s top player. The thought of a fully healthy Hughes leading the charge this year is enough to make any Devils fan optimistic.

Next on the list is goaltender Jacob Markstrom. The veteran netminder made a significant impact last season, even after missing time with injuries. Signed through this season, he’s expected to carry the starting role and remain a stabilizing force in the crease.

The third member, defenseman Luke Hughes, is just 21 but already generating big expectations. Awaiting a new contract, he’s projected to anchor the Devils’ blue line for years to come, following in his brother’s footsteps as a franchise cornerstone.

But is that really the Devils’ “Big Three”? Not everyone agrees.

Jesper Bratt, for example, led the team in points in 2024–25, appearing in 81 games and delivering consistent offense. Captain Nico Hischier also deserves consideration; he ranked second in the NHL in faceoff wins, led the Devils in regular-season goals, and continues to shine as one of the league’s best two-way forwards.

And then there’s Dougie Hamilton, a veteran defenseman whose leadership and strong play have reshaped New Jersey’s defense and mentored its younger players. For some fans, Hamilton’s inclusion isn’t even up for debate.

Whether it’s Hughes, Hughes, and Markstrom, or a different combination entirely, one thing is clear: the Devils have more than just three stars capable of leading them deep into the playoffs.
