NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald officially got his goaltender.
On Wednesday, the club acquired 34-year-old Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames. Fitzgerald sent defenseman Kevin Bahl and a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Flames. Travis Yost of TSN was the first to report the news.
Per the official press release, "Calgary will be retaining 31.25 percent of Markstrom’s remaining contract, which after this season, has two years left on a six-year, $36,000,000 ($6,000,000 average annual value) deal originally signed with the Flames on October 9, 2020. The cap hit for those remaining two years will be $4,125,000."
Multiple outlets reported Markstrom was nearly traded to the Devils this past NHL trade deadline, but the deal fell apart when Flames ownership reportedly intervened.
On June 18, Eric Francis of Sportsnet interviewed Flames general manager Craig Conroy about the saga surrounding Markstrom over the past several months.
"As we work through the process, you just talk to teams about everything. I don't know if the goalie market has changed or is the same, but we work through the process here, and we talk about how we make the team better and move forward."
Markstom appeared in 48 games for the Flames this past season and earned 23 wins. He finished the campaign with a .905 save percentage and 2.78 goals against average. The Gavle, Sweden native, surrendered 131 goals, while he was expected to give up 160.
Bahl, 23, appeared in all 82 games last season for New Jersey. He led all defensemen in hits with 151 and offensively hit a new high with 11 points (one goal, 10 assists). As The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported, the 2025 first-round pick is top 10 protected.
This is the second trade Fitzgerald has made with the Flames this past year. On June 27, 2023, New Jersey acquired Tyler Toffoli from Calgary in exchange for Yegor Sharangovich and a 3rd-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
