The IIHF World Championship has kicked off, and Canada secured their first win of the tournament thanks to a goal from New Jersey Devils’ Connor Brown.
Canada beat Sweden 5-3 in the opening game.
The game was tied 3-3 before Brown’s early third-period goal shifted momentum, setting Team Canada up for a strong tournament start.
After the win, Canadian goaltender Jett Greaves offered his perspective on Team Canada’s performance.
"We got better as the game went on," said Greaves. "We did a good job in the third period, and we're excited to get the three points against a really good team. We have a lot of respect for them and know they have many great players. But now we have to keep our foot on the gas."
Greaves stopped 25 shots in his debut, while Brown, in just over 14 minutes and 21 shifts, scored the decisive goal.
The game kicked off with early scoring from both teams; two passes from Philadelphia Flyers’ Porter Martone and Boston Bruins’ Fraser Mitten set Brown up to give Canada the 4-3 lead.
Brown saw just over 14 minutes of ice time in 21 shifts for Team Canada.
With momentum from their win, the team faced Team Italy the following day.
