According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the sale is expected to officially close sometime after July 5th.
Since 2015, CapFriendly has been the site for many fans to find all the details they need about contracts. They could find how many years a player had left on their contract, the signing bonuses earned, if the player is waiver-exempt and if they become a UFA or an RFA after their contract expires. The site also had features to complete mock drafts and build their own NHL roster.
This move comes as a surprise for many fans but is likely an inevitability for NHL teams around the league.
In Friedman's article, he mentioned why this transaction is happening.
"NHL teams that had agreements to use their tools/Application Programming Interface (API) recently received notice that these contracts would be terminated. This led to speculation that one club was buying the site, and all information pointed to the Capitals. You can definitely see why a team would want this infrastructure. After the transaction officially closes, the website will go dark."
