New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer established a new franchise record on Tuesday night, appearing in his 402nd consecutive game and surpassing Travis Zajac for the most straight games played in Devils history since debuting.

Mercer has played every game since his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season. The 24-year-old was drafted 18th overall in 2020.

He spoke with NJD.tv ahead of the milestone game about what it means to him to reach this accomplishment.

“I feel like it just flies by. Five years goes by pretty quick since I first got here to Jersey in my first season,” he said. “It’s been special being able to go out there every night, have fun and help my team win. It’s crazy how quick the years go and that I’m already at that milestone right now.”

Mercer has earned a total of 98 goals and 105 assists in his 401 games played.

This season, in 73 games, he has 36 points (15 goals, 21 assists). Mercer’s ongoing consecutive games streak is a rare feat in the National Hockey League and underscores his durability and commitment.

He shared his mentality throughout his career.

“I just take it day by day, especially early on in my career,” Mercer said. “You’re in the moment, trying to do your best, become the best player that you can be. Overall, I’m making sure I’m playing smart out there. It’s a tough game and it’s hard to stay healthy. I’m pretty happy. It’s a proud accomplishment for me and hopefully tonight goes pretty good.”

The Devils fell to the New York Rangers on Tuesday night, Mercer skating in his 402nd game.
