NASHVILLE, T.N. -- The New Jersey Devils' next selection at the 2023 Upper Deck NHL Draft came in the fourth round. In previous years, the organization selected Ethan Edwards, Tyce Thompson, and Miles Wood in Round 4.
With their second selection in the 2023 NHL Draft, the Devils selected Cam Squires from the Cape Breton Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
Scott Wheeler (The Athletic): He’s one of the most intelligent players in the draft, with advanced instincts on and off the puck, a great attention to detail, and a mind and feel for spacing and timing on the ice. He’s also got a ton of runway in front him physically to fill out his frame and find another level.
The 18-year-old appeared in 67 games for the Eagles last season and registered 64 points. His 30 goals were third best on the team as well as his 34 assists. In the postseason, the right winger led the team with six points in four games.
After being selected, Squires met with Devils' team reporter Sam Kasan and spoke about his game.
"I'm a smart, skilled forward. I like to score goals. I'm a playmaker as well," he said. "I get things going in the offensive zone and my 200-foot game has come a long way. I'm turning into an overall three zone play. I play with speed. I'm an exciting player to watch."
When asked which NHL players he looks up to, Squires said Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It's unclear if he will attend the Devils' development camp next week, but when asked about it said, "Going to development camp is a dream come true. Getting to see all the players, finally getting a first taste of the (NHL), and getting your toes in the water and working on your game. It's really exciting and I'm looking forward to the challenge.
