The New Jersey Devils have acquired defenseman Brian Dumoulin from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick and prospect Herman Traff. The Ducks will also retain half of Dumoulin's $3.15 million cap hit.
Seeing the Devils bring in a veteran defenseman like Dumoulin is entirely understandable. Both Joonas Siegenthaler and Dougie Hamilton are out due to injury, so adding Dumoulin should give New Jersey's defense a bit more of a boost.
Dumoulin, 33, is well-known for being a steady defensive defenseman. The 6-foot-4 blueliner should serve well in a bottom-pairing role and on the Devils' penalty kill. However, he can also handle top-four minutes if needed. It also does not hurt that he has plenty of playoff experience, winning two Stanley Cups.
In 61 games this season, Dumoulin has two goals, 16 points, 60 hits, 91 blocks, and a plus-2 rating. It will be intriguing to see how much of an impact the pending unrestricted free agent can make with the Devils from here.
Traff, 19, was selected by the Devils with the 91st overall pick of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-2 winger has appeared in 25 games this season with HV71 of the Swedish Hockey League, where he has three goals, seven points, 29 penalty minutes, and a minus-4 rating.
