The New Jersey Devils defenseman is recovering from a fractured fibula sustained last season.

NEWARK, N.J. -- On Thursday afternoon, general manager Tom Fitzgerald shared that newly signed defenseman Brett Pesce is considered week-to-week.

"With Brett, we all knew prior to signing him that he had season-ending surgery with Carolina," Fitzgerald said. "He's made great progress since he's been in town. Our medical staff has done an incredible job with him. Everything looks great. It's just a comfort with the skate, getting your agility and working on those muscles."

The 29-year-old suffered a fractured fibula last season, which caused him to miss part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In 70 games last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, Pesce had three goals and 10 assists for 13 points.

Pesce was the Devils' big free-agent signing. The blueliner signed a six-year contract worth $33,000,000 with an annual average value of $5,500,000.

The coaching staff utilized the following defensive pairs on the first day of training camp:

    Group 1

    Jonas Siegenthaler - Johnathan Kovacevic

    Santeri Hatakka - Simon Nemec

    Jakub Zboril - Daniil Misyul

Jackson Van De Leest - Mikael Diotte

    Group 2

    Brenden Dillon - Dougie Hamilton

    Colton White - Nick DeSimone

    Topias Vilen - Seamus Casey

    Will MacKinnon - Andy Welinski

Defenseman Luke Hughes is also out with an injury. On Sept. 12, the team announced that the youngster suffered a left shoulder injury during off-season training. His recovery time is approximately six to eight weeks.
