New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier helped a family in distress.
New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier does a lot of things exceptionally well. He plays a strong 200-foot game and keeps it honest at all times.
Without ever cheating for offense, Hischier can score goals, drive a line, and keep his opponents from creating much against him.
Off the ice, Hischier was enough of a leader within the locker room to become one of the youngest captains in NHL history. Since then, he's taken his game and leadership to the next level.
On Thursday, a story about Hischier came out that displayed a sense of humanity that most have come to expect from NHL players.
Hischier, along with some of his friends, helped save a family who was in distress as their inflatable boat became stranded near a dam in Bern, Switzerland.
Being the leader he is, he undervalued his role in the rescue, giving most of the praise to the police response, although a witness described Hischier's actions as "heroic".
It isn’t surprising to hear a story about Hischier being a part of an incredible off-ice story, but it is a reminder of how NHL players are out interacting with the real world in addition to being these superstars during the season.
As far as representing the league and the Devils, few have done it better over history than Captain Nico Hischier.
