NEWARK, N.J. -- There were only 10 participants in the New Jersey Devils Wednesday afternoon practice, and it is safe to say no one was happier to be there than Samuel Laberge.

Since signing his first professional contract with the Texas Stars (American Hockey League) on July 12, 2017, he has bounced between the ECHL and AHL. The Chateauguay, Quebec native has been with the Devils organization since the 2021-22 season.

The 26-year-old found out he was being called up to the NHL after the Utica Comets practice on Tuesday afternoon.

"I signed my contract on Saturday and found out after practice on Tuesday," Laberge said. "I'm really excited about it."

The versatile forward signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Devils on November 25. He was previously on an AHL contract, which meant he could not be called to the NHL.

Per the press release, he has recorded 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) in 104 regular-season games with Utica from 2021 to 22. The 6'2", 205 lbs. forward has played 201 career games in the AHL and earned 54 points (22 goals, 32 assists) and 274 penalty minutes. Laberge has played in eight games with Utica this season, collecting three points (one goal, two assists) and totaling 16 PIMs, which leads the Comets.

He hopes to add a spark to the bottom six if he gets the nod versus the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.

"I'm bringing a lot of energy and a physical game to the (Comets)," Laberge said. "That's why I think I'm at this level, to try and bring energy to the team. I'm going to keep doing the same thing I'm doing and try to play my role."

This is the first time Laberge has been called up to an NHL club.
