PITTSBURGH, P.A. -- On Wednesday afternoon, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman announced the Pittsburgh Penguins placed ex-Devil Andreas Johnsson on unconditional waivers for the purposes of contract termination.
The Swede signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Penguins on July 7, 2023.
Johnsson, 28, was acquired by New Jersey from the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 10, 2020, in exchange for Joey Anderson.
After not making the 2022-23 roster out of training camp, New Jersey assigned him to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. On Feb. 26, 2023, New Jersey shipped Johnsson to the San Jose Sharks as part of the trade package for Timo Meier. He appeared in 123 games as a Devil, earning 46 points (18 goals, 28 assists).
The winger did not make the Penguins roster out of training camp and was assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL to start the 2023-24 season.
According to Tony Androckitis from Inside AHL Hockey, "Johnsson appeared in an AHL preseason game with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton but was then referred to as 'away from the team tending to a personal matter' since the beginning of the regular season."
Over his six-season NHL career, he has played for the Maple Leafs, Devils, and Sharks. He had collected 116 career points in 259 games.
