Four games were played on Sunday and in each matchup, the home team came out on top.
The Florida Panthers, New York Rangers, Winnipeg Jets and Vancouver Canucks were all victorious in their series openers.
On the scoreboard, the game was close but throughout the game, the Panthers were the better team. The Panthers took more shots and higher quality shots and were ultimately rewarded for it. Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaege and Matthew Tkachuk scored for the Panthers.
After a scoreless first period, the Rangers came out flying in the second. They scored three answered goals and it was more than enough for them to win this game. The Capitals had four power plays but were still outshot 31-21. Former New Jersey Devil, Jimmy Vesey scored and added an assist on the opening goal of the game.
A wild six-goal first period finished tied at three. Former Devils winger Miles Wood scored for the Avalanche. The Avalanche outshot the Jets 46-23 but still gave up seven goals with no empty netters. The Avalanche have a well-built roster but if they are unable to get saves from their goaltender, the series may not last too long.
The two teams combined for fewer shots than the Avalanche finished with but it didn't matter for the Canucks because they scored the ones they needed too. Pius Suter and Dakota Joshua scored 12 seconds apart in the third period to tie the game and then take the lead.
Another four games are scheduled tonight. The Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings as well as the Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights play game one. Game two between the Hurricanes and Islanders and the Bruins and Maple Leafs is scheduled for tonight as well.
