The New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning had their backs against the walls and found a way to stay alive, the Boston Bruins put themselves one game away from winning their series and the Dallas Stars won in overtime to bring themselves back into the series.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring thanks to a power play goal by Seth Jarvis. Back-to-back goals by the Islanders gave them the lead before former New Jersey Devil Stefan Noesen tied the game. In the first overtime period, the Hurricanes fired 17 shots at Semyon Varlamov but couldn't find the winner. He finished the game with 42 saves. 1:42 into the second overtime frame, Mathew Barzal scored his second of the game.
Mikhail Sergachev returned to the Lightning lineup for the first time since fracturing his tibia and fibula on Feb. 7. He picked up an assist on Brandon Hagel's second goal of the game. Steven Stamkos also scored twice and he's up to five goals in the playoffs. The Lightning went into the third period up by a goal and played a textbook defensive period allowing just five shots.
James Van Riemsdyk, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak each scored for the Bruins and Mitch Marner scored the lone goal for the Maple Leafs. The Bruins played air-tight defensively giving the Maple Leafs no space to enter their zone. When they did, Jeremy Swayman once again had the answers. William Nylander, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner had a moment of frustration in the second period that went viral. Matthews was pulled from the game by the team doctors because of the illness he's been dealing with the past few days. The Maple Leafs have now lost six straight playoff games at home.
The Stars came out hungry and desperate putting 18 shots on goal in the first period. The Stars went up 2-0 before the Golden Knights were finally able to get their offence going. Brayden McNabb scored first before Jack Eichel scored on a 2-on-1 short-handed. The Golden Knights played a tighter defensive game in the third period but in overtime, Johnston was able to score his second of the game. Johnston finished the season with 32 goals and 65 points and played tonight's game as if losing was not an option. He fired eight shots on goal and played the most minutes of every forward on the Stars. The 20-year-old is morphing into a superstar as each game goes by.
