New Jersey Devils defenseman Brett Pesce has confirmed his participation in the 2025 Shoulder Check Showcase.

The Shoulder Check Showcase is more than just an opportunity for players to get on the ice during the summer, it’s for a greater cause. The event honors Hayden Thorsen, a 16-year-old hockey goalie from the tri-state area who tragically died by suicide on May 26, 2022. Thorsen had dreams of playing hockey at the next level, and this showcase aims to carry forward his memory while promoting mental health awareness in the hockey community.

Each year, current and former NHL and PWHL players come together to honor Thorsen. This year’s event will take place on July 24, 2025, at the Terry Conners Rink in Connecticut.

The NHL has officially announced the list of participants for this year’s showcase. Brett Pesce will represent the New Jersey Devils as the team’s sole confirmed participant.

Pesce was a key presence on the Devils’ blue line last season, playing in 72 games and recording 17 points. Entering his 10th season in the league, Pesce has become known for his steady defensive play and leadership.

At the end of the 2024–25 season, Pesce spoke to the media about the team’s culture, saying:

“I think we are building something here that’s pretty special… We have something that most teams don’t.”

When asked what he meant, Pesce elaborated:

“Just everything. The guys in the room, the way we blend together, the personnel.”

Pesce highlighted how the team’s mix of veterans and younger players contributes to its unique environment, something that can shape not only performance on the ice but also players’ mental well-being.

For the charity game, however, rivalries will be put aside. Pesce will skate alongside six New York Rangers players: Adam Fox, Matt Rempe, Brett Berard, Gabe Perreault, Drew Fortescue, and Jonathan Quick, as part of the third annual showcase raising awareness for mental health.

Before each game, participants gather at center ice to take the Shoulder Check pledge:

    “I promise to… Reach Out… Check In… Make Contact.”

This pledge reflects the way Thorsen always checked in on his teammates, ensuring they were okay both on and off the ice. Pesce will honor that legacy by taking part in this meaningful event.

The day’s schedule begins at 4 p.m. with activities, food, and raffles, followed by an on-ice skills showcase at 6 p.m. The puck will drop for the main game at 6:30 p.m.
