The Utah Hockey Club claimed New Jersey Devils depth defenseman Nick DeSimone off waivers Sunday afternoon.
The New Jersey Devils lost one of their depth defenseman on Sunday afternoon.
After placing Nick DeSimone on waivers on Monday, Jan. 4, the 30-year-old was claimed by the Utah Hockey Club.
New Jersey acquired DeSimone on Jan. 25, 2024, off waivers from the Calgary Flames. He appeared in 11 games for the Devils and 12 for the Utica Comets, New Jersey's American Hockey League affiliate.
Last season, he spoke to The Hockey News about the reality of being waived.
"I mean, initially, I think being waived is humbling in itself," he said. "Then being picked up is a good feeling. You get another chance in another organization."
Utah currently has three defensemen on injured reserve, according to the NHL Media Site: Robert Bortuzzo, Sean Durzi, and Maveric Lamoureux. Former Devil John Marino has been dealing with an injury that has kept him off the ice this season as well.
DeSimone was recalled to New Jersey on Dec. 27, replacing Colton White, who was serving as the team's seventh defenseman. He was with the Devils during their West Coast road trip.
At this time, New Jersey has two extra players, Justin Dowling and Kurtis MacDermid, on their trip as they prepare to face the Seattle Kraken on Monday night before traveling back to the east coast.
