NEWARK, N.J. -- Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported that he is not expecting a hearing for New York Rangers' Matt Rempe for his hit on New Jersey Devils' Nathan Bastian.

Rempe was assessed a roughing penalty and a match penalty for the hit, which ended his night after 13 seconds of ice time.

"That's just a big man. Everything is down. There's nothing that's up," Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette said after the game. "Never lifted his arm. I'm glad [Bastian] came back and played and was not hurt from that. Nobody wants to see anybody get hurt, but it's just tough. He's a big guy. He was full steam ahead and kept everything down. He tried to go through the body, and I'm sure he hit everything. It's a tough call. We'll look at it and see."

Devils' head coach Lindy Ruff provided his inital reaction during his post-game press conference.

"I haven't taken a real hard look at the hit yet; I will when I go through the game," he said. "I saw it on the monitor. I did not like the hit. It is probably something the league will take a look at, too, but that is out of my hands."

Rempe is listed on the NHL media site as 6' 7", 241 pounds, while Bastian is 6' 4", 205 pounds. Bastian's head was the main point of contact.

"If you look at Bastian, he is not materially moving his head at the last second," Elliotte Friedman said on a recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast. "One thing the NHL says is as long as the player does not move his head at the last second, it is your responsibility as the hitter to not make contact with it. That's Rempe's mistake. Here, he makes contact with the head; it is on him to avoid it."

Ruff confirmed that Bastian was unable to finish the game due to an injury that was seperate from the Rempe hit but did not share any further details.

The Devils' next game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24, when they host the Montreal Canadiens at Prudential Center. Any updates on Bastian should be provided at that time.
