On Monday, the New Jersey Devils announced they assigned Nico Daws to the Utica Comets.

NEWARK, N.J. -- On Monday afternoon, the New Jersey Devils announced they assigned young goaltender Nico Daws to the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League (AHL).

The Devils will move forward with a goaltending tandem of Jake Allen and Kaapo Kahkonen, who were acquired ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.

Daws spoke to Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News days ago about the team's goaltending moves, including trading Vitek Vanecek to the San Jose Sharks and assigning Akira Schmid to the Comets.

"I don't know what the plan is for me. Obviously, I am just going to put my head down and work until someone tells me otherwise," he said.

Recently, interim head coach Travis Green said the organization would take things day by day when it comes to carrying three goaltenders on their roster for the remainder of the season.

Carrying three goaltenders is always challenging, especially when the result is sitting a 23-year-old who needs reps and game action. Since Allen's debut on March 14, Daws has been a healthy scratch in two of three games.

Daws most recently made a relief appearance, replacing Kahkonen on Saturday against the Arizona Coyotes. He stopped all 16 shots against.

According to the Comets' website, Utica has four goaltenders on its roster: Daws, Schmid, Isaac Poulter, and Erik Kallgren. Its next game is Friday, March 22, against Tyce Thompson and the Bridgeport Islanders.

In addition to Daws, the Devils also assigned defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon, who was recalled on March 13.
