On the brink of their ninth regulation loss of the season, Utica Comets head coach Kevin Dineen pulled goaltender Isaac Poulter for the extra attacker in the final minutes of the third period.
Rookie defenseman Seamus Casey received the puck from fellow defenseman Topias Vilen with 1:43 remaining in the third period. Casey skated towards the middle of the ice and beat opposing netminder Michael Houser to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime.
"I was getting a good amount of time there at the end, so I wanted to contribute," Casey said to Daily Sentinel Sports after the game (from 'Late goal helps Comets earn first point in the standings this season,' Daily Sentinel, 11/2/24).
Comets' captain Ryan Schmelzer grabbed the puck for Casey.
The blueliner's goal helped the Comets secure their first point of the season as the team was defeated in the shootout. Their record is 0-8-0-1.
"Nobody's pointing a finger in there," Casey said of the team's poor start. "It is all on us. We've got a really tight room. That's important. And we will find it. There is no one panicking. …There is a lot of pressure because we are getting paid to do this, and we put a lot on ourselves. No one is accepting it in there."
The 20-year-old has been making an impact since he was assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL) on Oct. 21, collecting seven points (one goal, six assists) in five games.
Before being re-assigned, Casey appeared in eight games with the New Jersey Devils and earned four points (three goals, one assist).
The Comets will be off on Sunday. Their next game will be Friday, Nov. 8, when the club hosts the Cleveland Monsters.
