The New Jersey Devils acquired an early second-round pick (amongst other things) in the deal that sent Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames. 

The 35th overall pick originally belonged to the New York Rangers before the Flames acquired it. When the Devils were on the clock, they traded back two spots with the Chicago Blackhawks. In the process of moving back, the Devils added pick 119. 

With the 37th overall pick, the New Jersey Devils selected Finnish forward Matias Vanhanen of the Everett Silvertips. He is a playmaking forward who will bring top-six potential to the prospect farm. 

The Silvertips were just in the Memorial Cup championship, losing to the Kitchener Rangers, and Vanhanen was a big part of their attack. It was a great year for the WHL champions, who were loaded with dynamic players with bright futures. 

With Everett, Vanhanen had 21 goals and 66 assists for 87 points in 62 games played. In 7 World Junior Championship games, he had 6 assists.

Later in the second round, the New Jersey Devils used pick 44 to select defenseman Nikita Shcherbakov. This big Russian defenseman brings size and compete to the Devils' system. 

Shcherbakov, despite being a big man, moves well. He doesn't bring much offensive flair to his game, but he can close caps and be defensively sound against good players. A future as a third-pair guy awaits him, if all goes well.
