New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on injured Nathan Bastian after his team's Sunday practice in Canmore, Alberta.

"He's going to be out at least a couple of weeks," Keefe told NJD.TV. "We will reassess him and figure out a plan from there."

He also confirmed that the Kitchener, Ontario native has returned to New Jersey.

Bastian sustained a jaw injury in the first period after challenging Calgary Flames forward Ryan Lomberg to a fight on Friday night.

As Paul Cotter entered the offensive zone, Flames' defenseman Brayden Pachal hit him along the boards. As the Devils forward fell to the ice, Lomberg hit him and landed on top of him. Bastian immediately came to Cotter's defense.

The 6-foot-4 depth forward did not return to the game.

At Sunday's practice, Kurtis MacDermid was on the fourth line, which Justin Dowling is centering in the absence of Curtis Lazar (lower-body injury).

Through 12 games this season, Bastian has five points (two goals, three assists). He is credited with 19 hits and seven blocked shots.

The Devils will play the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night at Rogers Place before returning to New Jersey. The team does not have an extra forward on their roster at the time of publication.
