New Jersey adds another defenseman by claiming Nick DeSimone from Calgary.

The New Jersey Devils claimed defenseman Nick DeSimone from the Calgary Flames on Thursday, Jan. 25. In a corresponding move, forward Jack Hughes was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 5.

DeSimone is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound blueliner who has appeared in 23 games for the Flames this season. He has collected five points (one goal, four assists). The East Amherst, New York native was undrafted.

The 29-year-old has appeared in 341 American Hockey League games, playing for the San Jose Barracuda, Rochester Americans, Stockton Heat, and Calgary Wranglers. He made his NHL debut with the Flames last season on Nov. 7, 2022, against the New York Islanders.

His first career goal was scored on Dec. 21, 2023, against the Anaheim Ducks.

DeSimone's last NHL game was on Jan. 18. He played a season-low 8:28 in the Flames 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

New Jersey has a depleted blue line with injuries to Dougie Hamilton, Jonas Siegenthaler, and Brendan Smith. Thursday morning, the organization announced defenseman Daniil Misyul, 23, was called up from the Utica Comets (American Hockey League).
