NHL Network released its list of the top 20 centers heading into the 2025-26 season, with two New Jersey Devils making the cut: Jack Hughes at No. 11 and Nico Hischier at No. 14.
Both players deserve recognition, but there’s a strong case that each should be ranked higher.
Jack Hughes – Underrated at No. 11 Hughes has quickly established himself as one of the NHL’s brightest young stars. While injuries have limited his availability, his production when healthy is undeniable. Last season, despite missing time, he appeared in 62 games and posted 70 points, including 27 goals.
When comparing his per-game production to some of the players ranked ahead of him, Hughes’ numbers suggest he belongs higher on the list. If he can stay healthy, a fully realized season from Hughes could elevate him into the league’s elite tier of centers.
Nico Hischier – Defensive Value Overlooked The Devils’ 26-year-old captain also deserves more respect. Hischier played 75 games last season, recording 35 goals and 69 points. His goal total tied him for 18th in the league, and his all-around play went far beyond the scoresheet.
Hischier contributed 14 power-play goals, 15 power-play assists, six shorthanded tallies, and three game-winners. More importantly, his defensive presence and ability to shut down opponents make him one of the NHL’s most complete two-way centers—an element not fully captured by statistics alone.
He did suffer a muscular injury during the World Championship in May but is expected to be ready for the start of the season.
Looking Ahead For both Hughes and Hischier, their placements on NHL Network’s list highlight the respect they’ve earned league-wide, but also provide fuel for the coming season. With better health, it wouldn’t be surprising to see both Devils climb even higher in future rankings.
